The Municipality of Faris

The municipality of Faris (Faridos in the possessive case) hugs the border between Laconia and Messinia and is to the south of the Municipalities of Mystras and Sparti. There are 12 villages in the municipal district and a total population of approximately 5,000. It is made up of the villages of Anogia, Arna, Vassiliki, Goranoi, Dafni, Lefkohoma, Xirokambi, Paliopanagia, Polovitsa, Potamia, Spartia and Trapezonti, which were formerly municipalities in their own right. The seat of the municipality is Xirokambi.

It was called Faris after the ancient city of that name whose existence is evidenced in the wider region from approximately 1600BC. The first reference to the name is in Homer’s Iliad (B582) where the towns of Laconia are listed as taking part in the expedition against Troy and contributing ships and fighting men under the leadership of Menelaus.

More information about the Municipality of Faris is available at www.dimosfaris.gr the official website of the municipality.
